President Trump spoke to Russian president Putin today by phone. The main subjects discussed were Venezuela, North Korea and a new nuclear arms control treaty that would include China as well as the USA and Russia. The two leaders speak about every 2-3 months. The current situation in Venezuela is so dangerous that the timing of the call makes great sense. This is especially so, since the USA backs president Juan Guaido of Venezuela while Russia backs the socialist dictator Maduro, and the two sides are in a major confrontation that could easily end in civil war unless the situation is defused. That's the actual news.
In reporting about the call, however, NBC News focused on Trump and Putting discussing the Mueller Report. Really. The White House release mentions that the two leaders spoke briefly about the Mueller Report but both knew that there had been no collusion. NBC blows that description into a news report that makes it sound like the Mueller Report was the main reason for the call (it wasn't). The NBC goes into the usual attack on President Trump. It says that there is "heightened scrutiny" on Trump's dealings with Russia during the 2016 campaign. Of course Mueller confirmed that there were no dealings by Trump with Russia during the 2016 campaign. NBC ignores the reality and continues to push the false narrative that there was collusion. But that's not all. NBC goes on in its report about this phone call to discuss how the Attorney General is "under pressure to resign" after his testimony the other day. NBC also reports here that Nancy Pelosi has accused Barr of lying.

There are, however, a batch of disgruntled Democrats scared that Barr's investigation into the 2016 election may show that Hillary Clinton, the DNC and the Obama administration tried to set up Trump to make it seem as if there had been collusion with Russia. That investigation could result in prison time for a bunch of prominent Democrats. As a result, many Dems are trying to damage Barr in advance so as to undermine his credibility when the results of the investigation are publicized.
