A Look Back

A year ago, president Obama was re-elected for a second term.  It is worth taking a look at how that year has gone for Obama.  What has he accomplished?  Where has he succeeded and where has he failed?  What surprises arose, and how did he handle them?

Let's start with Obama's triumphs.  Here is the list:

1.  Obama got Congress to agree to raise taxes on folks making over $450,000 per year.
2.  The Senate passed an immigration bill which has yet to be taken up in the House.

Here are some of the failures:

1.  The roll out of Obamacare has been a disaster at best.
2.  The Syrians ignored the "red line" set by Obama barring the use of chemical weapons.  About 2000 people were killed by sarin gas in 17 chemical attacks.  The "resolution" of the chemical onslaught has been that the man who ordered the attacks, Bashir al Assad, is secure in his position as president and America has basically agreed not to try to take him out.
3.  The world has been told that the NSA routinely spies on all sorts of electronic communications around the world to an extent that no one expected.
4.  The IRS has been revealed to have illegally targeted conservative groups and individuals for mistreatment.
5.  The Department of Justice has been shown to have misled federal courts in order to conduct surveillance of reporters at the AP and Fox News.
6.  The economy has limped along with very slow growth; a paltry number of jobs have been created; and there is no prospect of quicker growth in sight.
7.  Relations with allies like the UK, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Israel and others are at a low ebb.  Relations with adversaries like Russia have grown much worse.
8.  The situation in Afghanistan has not improved at all.  The imminent departure of American forces will likely lead to the restoration of Taliban rule.
9.  Iran is still on course to build nuclear weapons in the next few months.
10.  Obama's hopes for increased spending have all been dashed and the Sequester remains the law of the land.
11.  A large portion of the American public no longer pays attention when Obama speaks.

Here are the surprises that hit Obama:
1.  Everything -- after all, he claims never to know about anything.

It may be time for America to see about construction of a second monument like the one on Mount Rushmore.  It could have Obama, Jimmy Carter, Warren G. Harding and James Buchanan carved into it.  Unlike Mount Rushmore, however, these presidents could be shown from behind.
