Going Back To Basics in 2014

Seven weeks from today, America goes to the polls.  That's right, it is less than 50 days until the election.  Every member of Congress and one third of the Senate will be chosen.  Governors in the majority of states will also be selected.  Despite the major importance of the election and the short time until it happens, there seem to be no overarching issues moving the voters.  Oh, to be sure, there are some that are important to most people, but there really is no clear choice yet being presented.  Let's look at some of them.

First, we have to consider the economy.  What is president Obama's plan for growing the economy?  What is the plan of the Democrat party?  There really does not seem to be one.  I guess Obama could say that he wants more of the same, but more of nothing is still nothing.  The Republicans don't seem to have a plan either.  Right now, the GOP seems to be running on the "we're not Obama" platform.  To be fair, individual candidates for Congress or the Senate have made proposals, but there is no unified position on the economy from the GOP and no position at all from the Democrats.

Second, we ought to consider national security.  Obama and the Democrats are in favor of the non-war war on terrorism.  They want to use the "no boots on the ground" army and to ally America with Iran and Assad to defeat ISIS.  They also want to ignore America's allies and friends like the Kurds and to instead deal only with the Shiite regime in Baghdad.  When calls arise to secure America's borders to protect us from terrorism, Obama and the Obamacrats deny that there is a problem and attack anyone who calls for security as a racist.  In short, the Democrats are in favor of a confused muddle of a foreign policy, one that provides no security for America in the long run.  The GOP does not have a unified foreign policy either, although the vast bulk of those who make sense in discussing the threat of ISIS come from the Republican side.  The GOP at least seems to be serious about protecting the USA.  They understand that we need to do more than just talk about security.

There are a number of other important issues, but on all of them, there really are no clear proposals.

The time has come for the Republicans to put forward a plan similar to the Contract with America of the 1994 campaign.  America ought to understand what a Republican senate and house would do if they were chosen by the electorate.  There does not need to be a detailed platform, but the broad outlines of policy choices should be set forth.  Hopefully, by setting an agenda, the Republicans can keep the election from being fought on phony issues like the supposed War on Women.  Republicans need to give the country a clear choice for something other than ousting the Democrats.
