Primary elections in Massachusetts and New York had big surprises tonight. In Massachusetts, Martha Coakley had been the expected winner of the Democrat primary for governor. As of now, with 82% of the vote counted she is 23,000 votes ahead of her closest rival, but she got only 42% of the vote. It is an amazingly poor performance for the endorsed and anointed candidate. In New York, Andrew Cuomo won the Democrat nomination for governor, but Zephyr Teachout, a far left law professor with essentially no money or notice in the media is getting over 35% of the vote as of now. Cuomo, in essence, is getting only 60% of the vote while running essentially unopposed. Again, this is an amazingly poor performance by the governor.
In November, Cuomo looks like a sure thing for re-election, but tonight's performance at least injects a bit of doubt into that conclusion. In Massachusetts, however, Coakley seems so weak that she actually could lose to the Republican.
