The international group responsible for the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons is disbanding. The job is not complete, but at least most of the weapons that the Assad regime identified have been destroyed.
To say the least, this is surprising news. We know that the Assad regime has used chlorine gas on civilians and soldiers alike during the last few months. This chemical weapon was not on the prohibited list because it is also usable to keep swimming pools sanitary. Most observers also believe that the Assad forces have other hidden stockpiles of chemical weapons which were held back for possible future use. On top of this, the plants for manufacturing the weapons have not all been destroyed. Put all this together, and you find that last year's agreement regarding chemical weapons did not end the threat of their use in Syria or anywhere else.
