The Phrase That Says It All

Katrina vanden Heuvel is one of those Washington liberals who have no idea of reality.  In today's Washington Post, Katrina writes about the latest television offering by Ken Burns on PBS, this one about the Roosevelts.  What interested me in her piece was not her analysis of Burns' work; no surprise there, Katrina thought that Burn's love letter to FDR was inspiring.  No, what interested me was the opening phrase of her piece which read:

"In the age of trickle-down economics and unrelenting attacks on the social safety net".

You see, in the distorted, even delusional mind of a liberal like Katrina vanden Heuvel, America under president Obama is still a land of "trickle-down economics" where the "social safety net" is not growing like crazy but rather is under attack.  It is a truly bizarre view.

Think about it.  Trickle down economics in the mind of a liberal is an economy where businesses, both large and small, are helped to grow larger and more profitable so that the wealth created will be shared by all in society.  Workers get higher wages from more profitable companies.  Investors earn more from the companies they own and then spend more, thereby creating more jobs and more wealth.  The focus is not to cut up the pie in different size pieces but to get everyone a bigger slice of pie by making the whole thing larger.  Since Obama took office, that approach has never been used.  There were no meaningful attempts to make the economy grow more quickly; quite the opposite was true.  Obama and the Obamacrats have taken steps to dry up bank loans for smaller and newer businesses.  Regulatory obstacles to business expansion have been increased to the point that most expansion has been prevented.  Energy costs have been pushed up due to government action so that the likelihood of profits for businesses have been reduced.  Even the stimulus pushed through by Obama in 2009 was focused mainly on paying salaries for employees of state and local government rather than on growing the economy.

Then there's vanden Heuvel's claim that the social safety net is under attack.  And she's not kidding!  Food stamps clearly are not under attack; the amount spent on that program under Obama is up by just under 100%.  Healthcare subsidies from the federal government are up by way more than 100%  during that same time.  Programs provide mortgage financing help, free cell phones, job training, money for living expenses and many other things for the poor and middle income groups.  This sort of spending is not under attack; it is now way up from where it was prior to Obama becoming president.

So how can vanden Heuvel make such bogus claims?  Does she understand that what she is saying is completely untrue?  That's where the most surprising answer comes into the picture.  Liberals like vanden Heuvel believe these falsehoods.  They live in a bubble in which the lies are repeated so often, that they have come to believe them.  Sadly, the majority of the mainstream media lives in that bubble as well.
