Taking the Playbook a Bit Too Far

One of the funnier events of the current political season came with the attack launched by Colorado Democrat Mark Udall on a campaign ad from his opponent Republican Cory Gardner.  Udall calls the ad a low blow and a personal attack on his father, the late senator Mo Udall.  The Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee called the ad "disgusting" and an attack on Udall's family.  So what did Gardner say to merit this onslaught?  He called Udall a "nice guy".  Really, that is what Gardner says in the ad.  Gardner also says that Udall can't change the senate because he is the senate.  He has been there for 18 years and has two cousins who are also senators.  Gardner adds that Udall's father was also in Congress and even ran for president.  That's it.  That is the "disgusting" personal attack on Udall's family.  that is the "low blow" personal attack.

In other words, it's a joke.  Gardner points out that Udall will never change the senate because he and his family have been there forever, and Udall cannot even understand that this is a fact and not an attack.

I have a bit of advice for Gardner.  Be careful about kissing babies on the campaign trail.  One of Udall's friends will likely swear out a complaint against you for assault.

For anyone who wants to see the actual ad that gave rise to this silliness, you can find it here.
