For the last two years, Washington has been filled with discussion of the terrorist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi Libya. There were three main issues which arose regarding the attack:
1. Why was security so lax at the consulate despite requests from the US ambassador to Libya to increase it. Who was responsible for not improving that security situation ahead of the attack, particularly on September 11th, the anniversary of the great attack of 2001?
2. Why was the response to the ongoing attack non-existent? Did anyone in Washington or elsewhere in the chain of command delay or refuse sending help to those Americans under fire?
3. In the aftermath of the attack, who came up with the idea to try to conceal the true nature of the attack by falsely claiming that it was the result of some youtube video?
There have been various congressional committees that have looked into these issues. There was also an "accountability review board" organized by the State Department to do an internal review. In fact, much of what got said in the congressional committees was to parrot back the findings of the Accountability Review Board.
Today, that whole façade created by the State Department to insulate both Secretary Clinton and her boss president Obama from any responsibility is crumbling. It is an extraordinary news event. Here's what has happened:
Noted reporter Sharyl Attkisson has an article at the Daily Signal in which she describes in detail how the State Department combed through all of its records and removed anything that might make Clinton or her top people look bad before those records were given to the Accountability Review Board. You should read the Atkisson article in full to get the complete story, but in short, she quotes former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Raymond Maxwell as discovering the "cleanup" effort and actually going to see it in progress. Maxwell says that he questioned if the removal of important documents was "unethical" and was told that those were the orders.
Let's stop here for a moment. It is important to realize the gravity of what is being said here. Removal of key documents prior to their being turned over to an investigation would be the crime of obstruction of justice. Since this was an internal investigation rather than one of a criminal nature, that may be different. But then comes the question whether or not the State Department turned over the documents removed from the files when those were requested by subpoena from Congress. If not, this would be contempt of Congress, another criminal act.
This is just the first salvo in what is going to be an all out assault on the stonewall put up by the State Department. It well may be that today's news may be the beginning of the "Don't draft Hillary" movement. This disclosure could well scuttle her bid to be president.
Look, it has been two years since Benghazi. The cover up by Obama and Clinton has kept things under wraps for the most part even until today. That means that there is less interest in this story in the media and by the public. Nevertheless, if it turns out that Maxwell is telling the truth and other State Department employees begin to also tell the truth, the whole house of cards may finally collapse. Honesty at the time of the attack would have meant a small hiccup for Clinton and Obama. disclosure now of a two year cover up will be much, much worse. Hillary may scream "What difference does it make?" The truth, however, is that it makes a big, big difference.
