It's a Good Thing He Wasn't There in 1776

With Independence Day just past, I was struck by a recent comment made by president Obama about the Syrian Civil War.  Obama said that it was a "fantasy" to think that Syrians who had been civilians like "former doctors, farmers, pharmacists, and so forth" could defeat a well-armed state like the Assad regime.  I guess Obama never heard of those civilians in the colonies who defeated the British army, the well-armed fighting machine of the British Empire, the strongest nation on earth at the time.

The truth is that in Syria, the Assad regime is crumbling.  If it were not for the assistance Assad gets from Iran, Hezbollah and Russia, his regime would already be history.  Indeed, if Obama had sufficient insight to have helped the Syrian uprising against this brutal dictator when it began four years ago, Syria today might well be governed by a regime comprised of Sunnis (they are about 75% of the people but have no power in Assad's Syria), Druse, Christians and others.  Of course, there might be civil unrest and fighting with ISIS, but we already have that.  Had Obama used common sense rather than relying on his ideology to guide America's actions, at least there would not be Iranian troops today in Syria.  Nor would there be Hezbollah terrorists roaming around southern and eastern parts of that country.  Oh, and there probably would be about 150,000 people alive today who died in the years of fighting, not to mention maybe five million fewer refugees across the Middle East.
