Let's start with the obvious: Donald Trump is a clown. No one but a clown would imply that illegal immigrants from Mexico were predominantly criminals. Still, Trump has an absolute right to say that; it's called free speech. Since Trump made his remarks, Univision and NBC have dumped the Miss USA Pageant which Trump owns and Macys has cut ties with Trump. Trump has sued Univision and there may be more litigation. That's fine. These are big companies that have contracts with the Trump organization and they either breached those contracts or not.
Now, however, something else has happened that just goes too far. New York's mayor announced that the city is reviewing its dealings with Trump with an eye towards terminating them because of what Trump said. That is much different from what a private company might do. The government cannot take action against a person for exercising his or her right to free speech. That's what the First Amendment to the Constitution means. Someone should tell that to the mayor.
