The Anchor Baby Dispute

I know it's the last week of August, so many people are on vacation, but do we really have to watch an argument about "anchor babies" or "birthright citizenship" or whatever term the PC Police now find acceptable?  The whole debate is silly.

First of all, there is the crazy debate over whether or not the Constitution mandates that babies born in the USA are citizens.  That's what the 14th Amendment says, so it's time for everyone to recognize this.  They also ought to recognize that there is simply no way that the amendment is, itself, going to be changed any time soon.

Second, while there are undoubtedly some children who were born in America just so that they can be American citizens, it is an extremely minor problem.  We have eleven or twelve million illegal aliens living in America.  That is the issue, not some families who get to immigrate here legally because their child is an American citizen.  The whole thing is a distraction.

Third, it is easy enough to change this if we want.  Let the baby stay as an American citizen, but take away the immigration preference for family members of American citizens who are minors.  In other words, if an American citizen is not yet 18 years old, do not give immigration preferences for his or her family.  That ought to end the problem right away.
