Peter Beinart is one of those delusional "thinkers" on the American left. Even so, his latest piece in The Atlantic is extraordinary for the level of delusion it displays. Beinart's basic thesis is that Iran is not really anti-Semitic and that Iran really would not use its nuclear weapons against Israel. Beinart says that those who portray the mullahs as anti-Semitic focus too much on what the Iranians say. I am not making this up; that is actually Beinart's point: critics of Iran pay too much attention to the statements that come from those in power in Teheran.
Let's stop here. Can you believe this? We have an entire government that keeps talking about destroying Israel and killing the Jews, but Beinart says we ought to ignore those words. That's like ignoring a gunman on a dark street who tells you "one more step and I'll shoot you." Only a fool would ignore those words.
Beinart says that rather than looking at the words used, we need to look at Iran's actions. Beinart wants everyone to notice that there are still ten thousand Jews in Iran. He then argues that if the Iranian government were really anti-Semitic, it would have killed those Jews long ago. This is another of those arguments that are so bizarre as to be meaningless. The mullahs have not yet killed all the Jews in Iran so they must not be anti-Semitic.
Imagine what Beinart would say if I were to argue to him that there is no racism in America because not all the African Americans have been slaughtered. He would rightfully tell me that I had lost my mind. But he makes the same argument.
Beinart also ignores the facts. When the mullahs came to power in 1979, there were 100,000 Jews in Iran. Today, there are just over 8000 left according to the last census. Are we supposed to believe that 92% of the Jews fled Iran because things were just too good for them there? Beinart has no explanation.
The real point is this: Mike Huckabee and others are correct when they say that a deal that allows Iran to get nukes leaves Israel dangerously exposed to destruction. It also leaves America in that position. We don't have to figure out what the mullahs are thinking on this point because THEY HAVE TOLD US. People like Beinart who want to ignore what the Ayatollah and others are saying are, at best, delusional.
