In the last two days, Donald Trump has displayed both a lack of class and a lack of honesty, and if it continues, it ought to be enough to push him out of the presidential race.
First, we have lack of class. Trump is attacking Megyn Kelly again. I have no problem with that; Trump can disagree with what Megyn puts on her show or with what her guests say. That is just debate. But Trump does not stop there. Instead he tweets or retweets personal attacks on Megyn that have no place in the debate. Do we really need to read a presidential candidate calling Kelly a bimbo? Do we really have to read about how Kelly's show is "failing"? (For those who don't know, Kelly's show is now the second highest rated news show on cable and it is threatening to overtake the first place show soon. It's hardly "failing".) I realize that for Trump to respond to the facts is difficult, especially if he keeps doing it on Twitter. But don't the American people deserve to decide on issues rather than spectacle? Being needlessly rude may bring in ratings but it is not what we need in a president.
Second, we have a lack of honesty. Trump attack governor Walker of Wisconsin's latest proposal by attacking Walker's record in his home state. That would be fine if Trump were honest in his attacks. Instead, Trump argued that Walker had a huge budget deficit in Wisconsin, something that is demonstrably untrue. Trump also argued that roads were not repaired (again untrue) and that Walker ran up enormous public debt (again untrue). Many times things get said in campaigns that go overboard; I get that. But Trump is simply taking the old phony talking points used by Democrats in Wisconsin in their crusades against Walker. He should know better than to do that. It is not a quality that we want in a president.
