Last night, there were barrages of rockets fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel. Both Hamas and Islamic Jihad took credit for the attacks. Most of the rockets were shot down, but a few got through. They hit houses and other buildings in Israeli communities near Gaza. Three people were wounded, two seriously.
In response to the rockets, Israel's air force attacked terrorist targets in Gaza. It took out multiple sites. Two people are reported killed in the air attacks, but there is no confirmation of this.
The Islamic Jihad spokesman threatened the upcoming Eurovision event which is scheduled for Israel within the next month.
It seems as if the Palestinians are gearing up for another bout of war with the Israelis. The Palestinians are, no doubt, disappointed in the results of the recent Israeli elections which resulted in the dramatic reduction in the fortunes of those who advocate making further concessions to the Palestinians. As a result, the Palestinian Authority and president Abbas have taken steps like refusing to accept the tax revenues collected by Israel for it. This is stressing the system in the West Bank region. In Gaza, while negotiations have come close to some sort of longer term solution between Hamas and Israel, the more strident terror groups like Islamic Jihad have used this situation to launch attacks to try to derail any agreement.
The escalating tension is likely to explode at some point over the summer or sooner. If the Palestinians keep hitting Israel with rockets, they are likely to be hit much harder by the Israeli air force. That could lead to all out war. It's not a war that Israel could lose, but it could bring Hezbollah into the fighting as well. With rockets coming from Lebanon and Gaza, the Israeli response could move up to a much more severe one. That could lead to major death and suffering coming for both sides. It could also lead to Iran getting involves and a wider war in the Middle East.
It's sad to think that the acts of some crazy terrorists could lead to a war across the Middle East.
