Well, today is the day! Supposedly, we should expect a big attack from al Qaeda somewhere in the world. That is why the president Obama decided to stand firm against terrorism by closing 22 American embassies in the Middle East and North Africa. A few more bits of information have made their way into the media and they deserve some attention.
1. There was a big meeting at the White House when the threat was uncovered in order to decide how to react. It was chaired by Susan Rice. Remember Rice? She is the woman who went on five Sunday morning news shows on national television to tell America that the attack on the Benghazi embassy was the result of a spontaneous protest of a youtube video. That, of course, was a total fabrication since the White House knew for certain by the time of her appearance that Benghazi had been an terror attack by the Libyan affiliate of al Qaeda. She probably spent most of the time at this meeting about the latest threat coming up with cover stories to tell America.
2. The NSA or CIA intercepted communications between terrorists in which they speak about how huge and strategically significant the upcoming attack will be. Supposedly, this communication was had on an open line and not in code. In other words, al Qaeda is just so excited about the upcoming attack that it broke all the rules of secrecy and discussed the attack in the open where it knew the CIA would be listening. Who knows? Maybe the breach of secrecy protocols is real. On the other hand, maybe the open conversation was had just to cause the USA to take all sort of responsive actions to an attack that is not even contemplated.
3. President Obama has no credible evidence that the attack will be on any American embassy. It could just as likely be on a soft target like a hotel or it could be an attack using planes like 9-11 or trains like in London and Madrid. The decision to close the embassies is a triumph of bureaucrats. Instead of upping security, we are just shutting the facilities. What would Obama do if the terrorists had said that the target was a military base? Would he pull out of all of them?
The truth is that we do not know if there is really an impending attack. We do not know what the target of that attack is. We just have to be ready for anything.
