The Terrible Truth -- Or The Lack of It

A Russian plane crashed in the Sinai peninsula of Egypt with 224 killed, and we still don't know what happened.  Since the crash we have heard the following:

1.  Egyptian authorities reported right after the crash that the crew had told traffic controllers on the ground that there was a problem and requested an emergency landing, but then communications cut out.

2.  Metrojet, the airline whose plane crashed, says there was no communication from the pilots to the ground and no request for an emergency landing.

3.  ISIS said that it had shot down the Russian jet.

4.  Egyptian, Russian and even American sources said that nothing indicated any terrorist responsibility for the crash.  They went further to point out that the plane was flying too high for any ISIS missile or anti-aircraft to reach.

5.  Today, Metrojet is saying that the only cause of the crash has to be something on the exterior of the plane.  There was no problem with the plane or the crew.

6.  Airbus, the manufacturer of the plane, says that there is no fault in the plane that could have caused it to break up in the air and crash as it did.

7.  Just now, Metrojet says that the crew of the plane must have been incapacitated because they made no attempt to contact the ground.

8.  The black boxes for the plane have been recovered, but we really don't know yet what those boxes indicate.

So where does that leave us?  We have a number of sources who are giving out conflicting stories.  On top of that, none of the sources are particularly believable.  ISIS would claim responsibility whether or not it shot down the plane.  The Russian company Metrojet seems to be trying to avoid any responsibility for the crash.  The Russian government would not want to admit that it lost all these people as a result of the Russian involvement in Syria.  In other words, everyone has a good motive for telling lies.

We may never know what happened.  I'm waiting for someone at CNN to speculate that the Russian plane crashed into that missing Malaysian airliner.
