Donald Trump has made a mistake. His refusal to show at tonight's GOP debate looks much worse after a day in the middle of the campaign muddle. Strangely, it was Fox News' biggest name who drove that point home. Last night, Bill O'Reilly heard Trump say that he didn't like a press release that Fox News had released the day before and that was the main reason he was not going to the debate. O'Reilly then urged Trump to show up and said that if Trump were president he would get much worse all the time. Those are killer words because they are true. How can Trump refuse to debate because he's annoyed about something that the network said in a snarky press release responding to Trump's initial blast but still claim to be the guy best suited to being president. It's like a guy trying to become a quarterback in the NFL who won't play in a scrimmage because he might get bruised.
After O'Reilly's remark, Trump did not seem perturbed, but he switched course and began to talk about how there had already been six debates and it was time to move on. Now there were too many debates. It did not matter, the main point had been made: Trump looks very much like a spoiled kid who refuses to do what is required of him.
As this percolates through the electorate in Iowa, I really think it will hurt Trump.
