Nonsense from the AP

Here is the topic sentence of a "news article" from the AP today:

Unpopular after 11 years in power, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is starting to face some open machinations from would-be successors, as his dream of negotiating Palestinian statehood lies in tatters.

There is so much wrong with that paragraph that only an organization as biased as the AP could write it.

First, AP talks of 11 years of Abbas being in power.  Remember that in 2004, Abbas was chosen for a four year term as president of the Palestinian Authority.  When the four year term was up, Abbas just stayed in power and no election was allowed to pick a successor.  In other words, Abbas is in the 11th year of a four year term.  He is an illegitimate usurper, not the properly selected leader of the Palestinians.

Second, any mention of the "dream" by Abbas of negotiating Palestinian statehood is ridiculous.  The Israelis offered Abbas roughly 99.5% of everything he wanted nine years ago.  Abbas refused to accept it.  In other words, Abbas made clear at that time that he was completely uninterested in any solution that saw a Palestinian state alongside Israel.  He wants only the destruction of Israel.

Third, the idea that Abbas is "starting" to face machinations from opponents is laughable.  In election for the Palestinian parliament many years ago, Hamas beat Abbas's Fatah party and took control of the chamber.  Abbas' response was to refuse to accept the Hamas victory or to cede any power to a Hamas prime minister.  The end result was the Hamas uprising in Gaza and the ouster of Fatah from that region.  In the rest of the Palestinian areas, Abbas has done his best to use the police to squelch Hamas.

Now let's be clear:  Hamas is a terrorist group, so there is no problem keeping them out of power.  Nevertheless, the idea that this is the first stirring of opposition to Abbas is totally ignorant of the past.
