At a town hall meeting in Iowa yesterday, Bernie Sanders was asked about Bill Clinton's history of alleged attacks on women and his dalliance with Monica Lewinsky. Here's how Bernie responded:
“Look, Hillary Clinton is not Bill Clinton. What Bill Clinton did, I think we can all acknowledge, was totally, totally, totally disgraceful and unacceptable. But I am running against Hillary Clinton. I’m not running against Bill Clinton.”
These are about the strongest words that have come from Sanders regarding the Clintons during the entire campaign. Bill's conduct was totally disgraceful and unacceptable. That also means that Hillary's defense of Bill against charges of misconduct was similarly disgraceful and unacceptable.
Is there anyone in America who thinks that Sanders would have said this had it not been for Donald Trump first bringing the issue to the fore? I doubt it. Hillary decided to make "defense of women who are victims of sexual abuse" a big part of her campaign and then to send Bill out to campaign for her. Trump pointed out the hypocrisy of Hillary defending Bill from charges of misconduct while claiming to want to protect abused women, and it garnered a lot of attention. At this point, Sanders knows that it is safe for him to use the same line of attack.
Once again, Trump has set the terms of the debate, and those terms are not good news for Hillary Clinton.
