Is It Hardball or Making an Offer They Can't Refuse

Here's an excerpt from a statement issued by Fox News about the withdrawal of Donald Trump from tomorrow's GOP debate on Fox.

"Capitulating to politicians’ ultimatums about a debate moderator violates all journalistic standards, as do threats, including the one leveled by Trump’s campaign manager Corey Lewandowski toward Megyn Kelly.   In a call on Saturday with a Fox News executive, Lewandowski stated that Megyn had a ‘rough couple of days after that last debate’ and he ‘would hate to have her go through that again.’ Lewandowski was warned not to level any more threats, but he continued to do so.”

So you decide.  Is this the art of the deal at work; in other words is Trump just playing hardball?  Alternatively, is this Trump behaving like a Mafia leader emulating Don Corleone and making Fox an offer it cannot refuse?

I have to say that I want a president who is tough and who will not hesitate to be tough when the situation calls for it.  Nevertheless, I also want a president who respects the Constitution and the rights of individual Americans.  I surely don't want a president who tried to bully people rather than reasoning with them.  After all, we just finished seven years with a president who vilifies his opponents at all turns rather than reasoning with them.  It's been a disaster.

On the whole, I think that Trump has the right not to attend the debate if he so chooses.  In my opinion, that is a mistake in judgment, but that is his right.  Trump does not have the right to threaten Megyn Kelly or Fox News, however.  He can tell them that they are wrong (which they sometimes are).  Threatening them, however, just goes way too far.

The truth is that I think Trump just managed to "schlong" himself.
