46 to 44

Here's a question to ponder:  What is 46 to 44?  The answer is surprising.  It is the result of the latest WMUR poll in the New Hampshire race for the Senate.  Senator Shaheen (D) is leading Scott Brown (R) by 46% to 44%.  It is a result within the margin of error.  It is also a major move up by Brown from previous polls.

The WMUR polls have a long history in New Hampshire and are generally pretty accurate.  This poll could be an outlier, and it may be that Shaheen is still ahead by more than 2%, but these results should be causing some sleepless nights for the Democrats in New Hampshire and Washington.  The poll also puts approval of president Obama by New Hampshire voters at the lowest level ever.  It seems likely that the putrid performance as president by Obama is pulling down Shaheen.  Also, if the Republicans manage to pick up the seat in New Hampshire, then the Senate will almost assuredly be controlled by the GOP.  Indeed, a victory by Brown in New Hampshire could signal that the seemingly never-ending mess caused by Obama is starting to produce a GOP wave that will swamp many Democrats in November.

Remember, election day is only two and a half months from now.  That is not a lot of time to change the momentum in the various races.  Nothing is carved in stone yet, but we are getting close.
