I must be missing something

Rick Perry got indicted yesterday in Texas.  If I am reading the indictment correctly, Perry is charged with misusing his power by pressuring a public official.  In essence, the facts are something like this:  a state prosecutor was stopped by police and found driving under the influence in a car with an open liquor bottle.  The prosecutor was arrested and convicted of DUI.  Perry demanded that the prosecutor resign (the prosecutor is an elected official) or he would cut off funds to that office.  He vetoed a bill that funded the prosecutor's office and the prosecutor then resigned.  That's it.

Perry, as governor, is supposed to do what he did.  He is supposed to use his powers (like the veto) to protect the public from bad officials like the convicted criminal prosecutor.

Either there is more to this story, or this is one of the worst political attacks by the Democrats ever.  But why go after Perry now?  He will only be governor for another few months.  No one in his right mind expects Perry to have any political success moving forward.  We all saw his "great" race for president last time, and once was surely enough.
