Two days ago, appointed Montana Democrat senator Walsh dropped out of his bid to be elected in November as a result of the discovery that his master's thesis was mostly not his own work. Walsh may lose his degree as a result, but more important, he will now surely lose his seat. The only hope that Montana Democrats had to save the seat (and it was a small hope) was that former governor Brian Schweitzer would step into the election as their candidate. Yesterday, Schweitzer said he would not be running. The end result is that the Republicans will now certainly win this seat. In fairness, Congressman Steve Daines, the Republican candidate, has been running way ahead of Walsh and would likely have won the seat even without the discovery of Walsh's cheating past. Now, absent some new unforeseen event, Daines and the GOP have it locked up.
With South Dakota and West Virginia, Montana makes three states that the Republicans are essentially certain to pick up in November.
