That Did Not Take Long

Earlier today, I wrote about the media's emphasis on today's "good news" including, among other things, the Russian agreement to let the Red Cross distribute Russian-supplied humanitarian aid in Ukraine.  Then came the news that the Russians had actually sent dozens of armored personnel carriers and military vehicles across the border into Ukraine overnight.  The Ukrainians spotted the movement of this force and opened fire on it once it was on Ukrainian territory.  According to the Ukrainian government, its artillery destroyed a large majority of the Russian vehicles.  We don't know yet what the Russian response will be, if anything.

Will Putin back off in the face of strong opposition from the Ukrainians?  Will Putin decide that he cannot accept defeat at the hands of Ukraine and order a much stronger move into that country?  Will this be the start of a general war between Ukraine and Russia?  If there is a major battle between the two countries, will the rest of Europe stand by and do nothing as Russia swallows up the most important of the former Soviet Republics that got its freedom when the USSR collapsed?

This all may turn out to be nothing, but it is way too soon to tell.
