Worrying About Marilinda Garcia

I had a chuckle this afternoon when I read a profile report on Marilinda Garcia at a left wing site.  For those of you who do not know (which is probably nearly everyone), Ms. Garcia is a candidate for Congress in New Hampshire.  She is running in a primary for the right to oppose the incumbent Democrat representative from the region.  What makes Marilinda Garcia special for the left is that she is 1) a woman, 2) young (she's 31) and 3) Hispanic.  Those three factors combined with Garcia's Republican party membership make her a living nightmare for the Democrats.

What I found most interesting about the article was not the usual denunciation of Garcia as a tool of the Tea Party, etc.  No, the humor came from the attempt to portray Marilinda Garcia as not really being Hispanic.  Her mother came from (gasp!) Italy.  Her father comes from Spain.  For the Democrats, that means that she is not really Hispanic.  Someone needs to explain to the progressives that Hispanic means someone of Spanish origin.  All those people from South America and Mexico are Hispanic because they speak Spanish (like, you guessed it, the people in Spain).  The left is so bothered by a young, Hispanic, Republican woman that they are now trying to define Spanish heritage as not being Hispanic.  What's next?  Will people whose ancestors came to America from Haiti no longer qualify as African Americans because Haiti is in the Caribbean?
