President Gumbama

Remember Gumby?  Gumby is the toy made from some sort of rubbery material that could be twisted into all sorts of positions.  If you pushed it, it moved.  It had no spine, no backbone.

Well once again, president Obama had demonstrated that he an Gumby share the same lack of backbone.  The latest move is Obama retreat on immigration.  The White House announced that despite repeated statements and promises by Obama that he would take executive action on immigration before the end of the Summer (of 2014), he will no longer do so.  Any executive action will be put off until after the November elections.  The funniest part of the White House announcement is that the delay has been put in place so as not to jeopardize congressional action on immigration reform.

So what can we take from this latest move by Obama (or should I call him Gumbama?)  First of all, Obama is once again telling lies, which seems to be his favorite hobby after golf.  There is no plan for Congress to consider immigration reform between now and the elections, so no move by Obama would jeopardize a non-existent congressional action.  The statement is just another blatant lie from the White House.

Second, when it comes to immigration, Obama's main goal is political.  He does not really care what is good for the USA; he just wants to gain some sort of political advantage.  How many times did Obama announce that action on immigration was critical?  How many times did he tell us that if Congress would not act, he would be forced to do so?  But when some Democrat senate candidates tell him that any move he made for amnesty would be very unpopular in their states, president Gumbama just twists himself some more and backs away from all those statements and promises.  I hope the Latino community understands from this latest move just what the Democrats think of them.  For Obama and the other Democrats, Latinos are potential voters for the future whose votes are taken for granted.

Look, in my opinion Obama does not have the power to act in unilateral fashion on immigration.  There already is a law, and Obama has the obligation to enforce that law.  He cannot change it.  But that is a discussion of policy, and right now we are discussing character, or more precisely, lack of character of president Gumbama.
