Telling the Truth About Race

Every few weeks, some national Democrat tells America that it is time to have a "serious conversation about race".  Somehow, though, we never have that conversation.  Maybe today it is time to begin it.

Let's start with a number:  11.4

If you focus at all on race, you know that 11.4% is the latest unemployment rate for African Americans according to the employment report issued this morning.  Compare that to 5.3% for whites and an even lower number for Asian Americans.  How can it be that the rate for blacks is so high?

The answer is simple, and it cannot be blamed on racism.  The real answer is that black unemployment is so high because of three things:  illegal immigration, poor schools in the big cities and faltering family structure in the black community.  Let's start with family structure.  Over 70% of all children born to African Americans are delivered to single mothers.  Each of these children grow up in a household with not father to provide discipline or even an example of how hard work is something good.  For whites and Asian Americans the comparable figures are around 20% and 13% born to single mothers.  Then, when it is time for the kids to go to school, a large percentage of blacks go to big city schools where the goal of the school district seems more focused on providing a good retirement for the teachers rather than a good education for the students.  Remember these are districts in cities run by the most liberal local governments in the country.  Sadly, however, those local governments care more about the teachers' unions and their contributions than about the students and their futures.  As a result, we have a society and school system that produces large numbers of African Americans who are destined for the less complex, lower paying jobs in the country.

That is where the illegal immigrants come in.  The flood of illegals that president Obama has let into America have come here to earn a better living for themselves and their families.  These people are willing to work extremely hard for less than even the legal minimums set by the USA.  The result is that employers hire illegals as day laborers rather than hiring full time American workers.  All sorts of businesses hire illegals "off the books" for 50% or less of what it would cost to hire a worker on the books.  In short, the illegals take away the jobs that otherwise would be available to the lower end of the job market.

By having so many of the jobs siphoned off to illegals, it does not only hurt blacks right now.  It also means that folks who would have been hired and then worked their way up from a relatively low paying job to a position with a solid middle class salary, no longer get to start travelling that road.  But the glut of illegals is one that the liberals seem to relish; Obama is doing all he can to encourage more to come and fewer to leave.

So there you have it.  The illegals are here and more are coming because of the policies of Obama and the Democrats.  The schools which ought to educate black children and prepare them for the workforce are focused instead on helping the teachers' unions because of the policies of the Democrats.  On top of this, the black family structure has disintegrated.  I blame that too on government welfare policies which rewarded families without fathers, but that is debatable.

And to whom do the people who are constantly being slammed by these policies look for help?  That's right, the Democrats, the very people who have inflicted this misery on them in the first place.  And what are the policy prescriptions from the Democrats?  Why more of the same!

How's that for a conversation starter?
