A Win for the Smear

Did you see the headlines yesterday about Wisconsin governor Scott Walker?  Most likely you read that prosecutors were alleging that Walker is the head of a nationwide criminal conspiracy.  Did you read, however, that the charges were all BS and that they were already thrown out by a court?  I doubt it.

Here's the background:  a few years ago, Walker was facing a recall election in Wisconsin that was the result of a statewide push by the left in response to Walker's changes in state labor laws.  The recall election was a bitter fight, but Walker won it easily.  While the campaign was underway, however, certain Democrat prosecutors got together to organize a criminal investigation into the fundraising for some of the larger backers of Walker.  The idea was to find a violation of the law and use that to shut off campaign funds for the forces backing Walker.  All sorts of subpoenas were issued, raids were conducted to seize records, people were interrogated, but no charges were ever brought because no proof of any wrongdoing was ever found.  Nevertheless, organizations like The Club For Growth were subjected to ongoing investigations, raids and the like.

After the "investigation" went on for a while, a lawsuit was started in Wisconsin by the organizations being harassed.  They sought to get an injunction ordering the prosecutors to stop the harassment.  A few months ago, the court ruled in favor of the organizations.  The court found that there was no basis for the actions of the prosecutors and that the activities being "investigated" were all protected by the US Constitution.  The prosecutors appealed, but that resulted in a court finding that the appeal was frivolous and had no chance of success.  As part of that appeal, however, the court records which included the documents generated in the investigation were unsealed.  It was in those documents where the allegations that Walker was the head of a criminal conspiracy were found.

In short, all of this means that the claim that Walker led a criminal conspiracy were never made in public by the prosecutors (since they had no evidence whatsoever to back this up).  It also means that the charges were already dismissed as FRIVOLOUS by the courts.  Get it?  The charges are bogus and the courts have already found that to be the case.

But when the mainstream media had the chance, it used these phony charges to attack Scott Walker.  The headlines all tell us that Walker is charged as the leader of a conspiracy.  The rest of the story does not get coverage.  Even for the biased mainstream media, this is disgusting.
