The Obama Doctrine?

I have been writing repeatedly about the lack of any strategic vision for foreign policy coming from the Obama White House.  That is one of the reasons that I was intrigued to read a column in the Daily Beast under the headline "Blame the Obama Doctrine for Iraq".  I know that there have been discussions from time to time about the need for an Obama Doctrine, but I was curious to see what the author of the article thought that doctrine included.  I wondered if I had somehow missed the strategic world view set forth by our president.

So what is the Obama Doctrine according to the Daily Beast?  It really has two parts.  The first part is Obama's plan for "reducing and limiting America’s role in the world, in order to focus on 'nation building at home.'”  Get it?  Obama's strategic vision for the world is for the USA to pay not attention to it and to focus, instead, at home.  That's roughly the equivalent of asking the head coach of an NFL team what his strategy is for Sunday's game and getting told that the plan is to ignore the game but to improve the cook out after the game.  It's certainly not a plan for foreign policy.

The second part of the "Obama Doctrine" according to the Daily Beast is “leading from behind” and “not doing stupid shit.”  That's a plan?  Really?

The truth is that the Daily Beast confirms what I have been saying:  the administration has no strategic view of the world.  It does not understand where America's long term interests lie; indeed, Obama has not even considered that question.

When it comes to foreign policy, Obama and his administration win the title for the most incompetent group ever.  The problem for us all is that they will be in office for another two and a half years.
