Another Distortion from the AP

Here is the lead paragraph of a story from the AP about the expected actions Monday from the Supreme Court:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is poised to deliver its verdict in a case that weighs the religious rights of employers and the right of women to the birth control of their choice.

The problem with this story is that it is wrong.  The issue is not the right of women to the birth control of their choice.  The issue is whether or not the government can require employers to pay for the birth control options chosen by their employees.  The owners of the companies that brought the suit have religious objections to certain types of birth control that work by means of abortion or something very close to that.  All of the women involved can still get "morning after" pills; the only question is whether or not certain employers can be mandated to include those pills in health insurance policies that get provided to employees.

This may seem like a minor difference, but it is anything but that.  Too many people get misled into thinking that somehow the dispute is between people who want to take away birth control and those who support it.  The only issue is whether or not people who oppose abortion-style birth control on religious grounds can be forced nevertheless to pay for that type of birth control for their employees.

The AP should and does know better.
