I find it hard to believe, but the Obama position on the Bergdahl/Taliban terrorist leader swap just got worse. The White House is now telling the media that the reason why president Obama did not consult with Congress -- as required by law -- before making the swap is that the Taliban had threatened to execute Sgt Bergdahl if word of the prisoner swap leaked out. Until today, the White House was saying that there had simply not been enough time to notify members of Congress. That previous excuse was lame (to say the least) since the swap was finalized on Tuesday but the exchange was not made until the following Saturday. In other words, during the five days between reaching an agreed deal and making the swap, Obama and his people supposedly just did not have time to call the few Congressional leaders who were supposed to get prior notice. It is no wonder that Obama has now abandoned the first supposed reason for violating the law by not telling Congress.
Let's consider the new excuse for failing to notify Congressional leaders. In its essence, the excuse is that the Congressional leadership could not keep a secret and therefore could not be told. Amazing! Does Obama truly have such a low opinion of the Congressional leadership that he does not believe that these men and women can be trusted? And did Obama actually believe that the Taliban would kill Bergdahl if word of the swap leaked out? Remember, these are the Taliban who celebrated the swap as a major victory over the USA. One would think that they relished more publicity for that great "victory". Remember also, that by giving up Bergdahl who is a nobody, the Taliban got back five men who they consider important leaders. How could any rational observer believe that the Taliban would kill their ticket to freedom for their leaders just because word of the swap had leaked?
In truth, any intelligence analyst would have told Obama that there was no real chance that the Taliban would kill Bergdahl. If the White House believes what it is now saying, then the only rational conclusion is that Obama and his people are totally delusional.
