Meanwhile, back in the Ukraine......

Remember the Ukraine?  It is so yesterday's crisis.  Right now, our attention is focused on Iraq, but back in Kiev things keep on moving right along.  So here's a quick update of the latest from Eastern Europe:

1.  The new president of Ukraine announced a unilateral cease fire.  Starting yesterday, Ukrainian forces were going to stop attacks on the pro-Russian rebels who have taken control of various facilities in the easternmost provinces of Ukraine.  The president asked that there be negotiations leading to a peaceful resolution of the rebel attacks.

2.  The pro-Russian separatist rebels did not stop fighting.  Instead, they went ahead with multiple attacks.  At the same time, they blamed the Ukrainian government for the failure of the cease fire that the Ukrainians had declared.  Get it?  The pro-Russian rebels did not accept the cease fire, continued their attacks but blamed the government for the lack of a real cease fire.

3.  The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, put all Russian military forces in the central region (near Ukraine) on highest military alert.  That happened in the last 24 hours.  So the Ukrainians call for peace and declare a cease fire and Russia gets ready for an invasion.

It's just another day in the region.  Most likely these latest moves will bring more sanctions from president Obama.  At last word, Obama was considering banning Amazon.com from selling any products to six high ranking Russian generals.  That ought to stop the invasion, don't you think?  If not, Obama has more actions prepared.  If the invasion proceeds, word is that Obama is going to force Apple iTunes to imposed a 3 cent surcharge on all purchases by known Russian military leaders.
