Last night, the House passed two bills regarding the immigration crisis at our southern border. The first bill provided extra funding for border enforcement, legal processing of the illegals who are streaming in and care and feeding of those same people. The second bill changes the immigration law so that children arriving from Central America are treated exactly the same as children arriving from Mexico.
So what was the media coverage of this event?
1. Much was made of president Obama mocking these bills because the Senate will never pass them and even if the Senate did pass them, Obama himself would veto them. I saw three separate TV reports on Obama's comments and read many more articles in the media. On none of the TV reports and in only one of the articles was there any mention that until a few weeks ago, Obama himself had announced himself in favor of the change to the law regarding the treatment of children from Central America. In two weeks, Obama's old position went from being a serious view to one that Obama portrayed as crazy and hateful, and the media did not even mention this change.
The media did mention that the Senate had gone on recess so that there was no way that the House bill could be passed quickly. The general storyline was that something had to be done right away to deal with the immigration crisis, the House had passed a bill which the Senate could not pass since it had gone on vacation, therefore, it was the fault of the House that nothing was done. Now I know that logic is not the greatest strength of the media, but when the House does its job and the Senate does not, why would the media blame the House?
The media made only slight mention also of the bipartisan opposition in the Senate that prevented passage of the funding bill Obama wanted because, among other reasons, it took no steps to deal with the causes of the crisis.
2. The media gave major coverage to some Democrat Hispanic congressmen who denounced Republicans for passing their bills and called those bills proof that Republicans are racists who hate Hispanics. Only one out of three TV stories gave any Republican the opportunity to explain why the bills were a good measure, but all three had the Democrats denouncing the bills as racist and hateful.
It is truly sad that our political battles have to be fought with the Democrats trying to stir up racial and ethnic hatreds to help their position. Can't they just for once put the good of the country ahead of their party?
