I finally got around to looking at the tax returns released by Hillary Clinton late Friday. There are some points that jump out at you quickly in that review:
1. For the years from 2007-2014 for which Bill and Hillary Clinton released their tax returns, their income was over $20 million per year. TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS per year for the couple that Hillary described as "dead broke". Bill and Hillary Clinton made more in one year than ten average American families make in a lifetime, but Hillary thinks they were broke.
2. Hillary Clinton and her husband gave roughly ten percent of their money to "charities", but nearly every cent of it went to the Clinton Family Foundation and its affiliated groups. Other than the Clinton Foundation, Bill and Hillary gave less than ten thousand dollars to charity out of one hundred and forty million dollars. It is important to distinguish between gifts to the family foundation and other charities. Hillary used the Clinton Family Foundation to employ most of her political staff for much of the last six years. The Foundation also picked up literally tens of millions of dollars of travel expenses including trips that Bill and Hillary took. The foundation actually made grants using only a small percentage of its expenditures. Without a full audit, we cannot be sure, but it certainly appears as if a large portion of the expenses of the foundation could have been for Hillary's personal and political needs rather than for charitable work.
3. Even when releasing her tax returns, Hillary feels compelled to lie. For the years in question, the Clinton's income was $141 million and they paid 43 million dollars in federal taxes. That comes to a 30% tax rate. In releasing the tax returns, however, the Clintons said that they paid a federal tax rate of 36%. There is really no material difference between the two rates as far as what it means for the Clintons. They are filthy rich no matter how one looks at it. Still, it is interesting that Hillary couldn't just go with the truth when she released her returns. That move tells us more about Hillary Clinton than her tax returns do.
