Was Bergdahl a Deserter?

In what has to be the weirdest twist possible, news reports now say that the American soldier for whom president Obama traded five dangerous terrorist leaders was actually a deserter and not a soldier captured by the Taliban.  Here is the link to one of the most convincing stories of this sort.

I hasten to say that I do not know the truth about this man yet.  He may be the hero soldier captured during a patrol as the administration portrays him or he may be the deserter who walked off from his guard position because he did not want to fight anymore.  That truth will eventually come out.  If it turns out, however, that this man was a deserter, then Obama had to know this.  He cannot use his usual response to bad news.  After all, can you imagine Obama telling the country that he learned that Bergdahl was a deserter from watching the news and that he is mad as hell about it?  Even a practiced liar like Obama could not pull that one off.

I hope that Obama did not trade five dangerous terrorists for a deserter.  After all, the trade is a close question if the man is a hero.  On the other hand, if Bergdahl turns out to be a deserter, then Obama just allowed dangerous enemy leaders to go free to get back a man who walked out on his country and his obligations.  That would be a travesty.
