The governor's race in Ohio is not likely to be close in November. The current governor, Republican John Kasich has a comfortable lead in the polls over Democrat Ed Fitzgerald. Even so, Fitzgerald's recent actions and statement probably make it likely that Kasich will win in a landslide.
A few days ago, police were called to a factory parking lot by a watchman who reported a suspicious car parked there at 4 a.m. The watchman speculated that there was a couple having sex in the car and wanted the police to move them away. When police arrived, they found Ed Fitzgerald and a woman who was visiting Ohio as part of a trade delegation from Ireland. The two claimed that they were "looking for friends" from whom they had gotten separated (although one has to wonder why they sat in the parking lot for over a half hour if they indeed were looking for these folk.) No one was arrested, but it was embarrassing for Fitzgerald to be sure.
For those of you who are wondering, Fitzgerald has been married for about 26 years and has four children.
When the story hit the Ohio media outlets, Fitzgerald and the Democrat spokesmen denounced the entire matter as a smear and diversion created by the Kasich campaign to divert attention from the "real" issues in the campaign. That really made things worse for Fitzgerald. He then was asked how the Kasich campaign got him [Fitzgerald] to be in a car with a young Irish woman at 4 a.m. in a deserted parking lot. You can imagine the answer to that one.
Fortunately for the Democrats, there is no race for the senate in Ohio this year. Nor are there any truly contested congressional seats. If Fitzgerald's candidacy collapses with this latest escapade, however, it could help swing the Ohio legislature towards a more Republican one.
