Another Reason to Push Gun Control Now

With the gun bill rejected by the Senate, president Obama and his administration continue to push for new gun control laws.  After all, something must be done to stop the ever increasing gun violence that has been sweeping the country.  Now, some new statistics have been released to provide further support for this effort.  The Bureau of Justice Statistics of the Department of Justice reported yesterday the following key data:

  • Firearm-related homicides declined 39%, from 18,253 in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011.
  • Nonfatal firearm crimes declined 69%, from 1.5 million victimizations in 1993 to 467,300 victimizations in 2011.

  • There you have it.  The Department of Justice is reporting striking declines in gun violence.

Wait!  Declines in gun violence by 69%?  Declines in murders with guns by nearly 40%?

The truth is that the statistics show clearly that there is no epidemic of gun violence in America.  Quite the contrary is true.  The use of guns in murders has plummeted and the overall use of guns in crimes has fallen by more than two thirds in the last two decades.

All that has happened is that there have been a few high-profile killings in which guns were used.  The acts of a few mad men do not change the basic point, however, that gun violence is way down.

Wouldn't it be nice if Obama and the Obamacrats at least had the honesty to step forward and admit the truth?  Don't bet on it.
