This afternoon, a county clerk in Kentucky was ordered off to prison if her office continued to refuse to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. That was a correct decision. The Supreme Court decided the law, and the clerk, as a government official, has to follow that law whether or not she agrees with it. There is no exception for religious beliefs. An official cannot decide to follow something other than the actual law.
That being said, maybe all those cheering for this result can tell me why it is that similar action is not taken against the mayors of sanctuary cities. Federal immigration law cannot be ignored by a government official just because he disagrees with it. Even if the city council has passed an ordinance that mandates disagreement with the federal law, the city officials still have to follow that federal law. The mayor of San Francisco ought to be put in prison for contempt. Then the city council should follow. Then every other city official who refuses to enforce immigration laws.
And what about places like Colorado that have legalized pot? The governor of that state has to enforce the federal law. It is not an option to choose yes or no.
So the gay marriage issue has been resolved and that law must be followed, but all those other laws have to be followed too.
(And by the way, that means that president Obama has to follow the law as well, something he has not done for a long time.)
