According to the mainstream media, President Trump has done nothing, at least nothing good, since taking office. That's nonsense, of course, but it doesn't stop them from saying it over and over. Today, we will hear the announcement of yet another Trump accomplishment. The President is going to appoint about ten additional federal judges. Five are to the appellate courts, four are to the district courts and one is to the Federal Court of International Trade. I won't bore you with the details on the nominees. Suffice to say that they are all well regarded conservative jurists or attorneys. They will all be quickly confirmed by the Senate, especially since the Democrats did away with the filibuster for nominations like this in 2013. The President has also said that this will be the first batch of monthly judicial nominations to fill the large number of vacancies in the judiciary. By the end of the year, President Trump could have appointed about 15% of all judges of the appellate courts. That change alone will modify the results of the incessant challenges to every action taken by Trump. In another two years, the percentage of judges appointed by Trump could easily top 25% of the federal judiciary.
If President Trump actually names such a large number of judges, it will be strictly as a result of the failure of president Obama to make nominations. Obama allowed an ever larger number of empty seats to accumulate and Trump is now filling them.
They may not sound that important, but the appointments will have a lasting effect on this country for decades. More than anything other than Supreme Court nominations, these appointments will go far towards keeping the time honored rules of the Constitution from being modified by judges who think that their personal preferences are more important that the Constitution itself.
