Earlier today, the junior senator from Connecticut, Chris Murphy, sent out his latest tweet on the House bill to repeal/replace Obamacare which the House just passed. Here is it:
House GOP, I hope you slept well last night. Because after this vote, you will have the death of thousands on your conscience forever.
Murphy has made clear in earlier tweets/statements that he is speaking of changes to the rules regarding pre-existing conditions that he claims the new law will make. Supposedly, thousands will be left to die because they won't be able to get coverage because of pre-existing conditions.
There's a problem with what Murphy says: IT'S A LIE.
There are two main issues dealing with pre-existing conditions:
1. Can insurance companies deny coverage to people who have a chronic illness or pre-existing condition. Under Obamacare, the answer is NO. Under the new law, the answer is NO.
2. Can insurance companies charge higher premiums to people with chronic illnesses or pre-existing conditions than to healthy people? Under Obamacare, the answer is NO. Under the new law, the answer is NO with an exception. Individual states can seek a waiver of this provision from the federal government but if a state gets such a waiver, it must take steps to assure that those with pre-existing conditions can get insurance at a reasonable price. The new law also sets aside $8 billion to help pay for any higher premiums for those with pre-existing conditions in states that seek and get waivers.
Put this together and you find that the big difference is that under the new law, the decision on premiums regarding pre-existing conditions are made by each state rather than by the federal government. That's it. No one who now has coverage loses it. No one is left to die as Murphy claims. For most people across the country, there won't be any change regarding pre-existing conditions because their states won't seek waivers.
This is important to understand since Murphy is not the only Democrat screaming about people dying if the law changes. It's all a lie. It's a political lie designed to make the GOP look like it wants to kill off the sick. After all, who wouldn't want to help the sick? The problem, however, is that America needs to understand just how dishonest the Democrats really are.
