Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has written an op-ed piece in the Huffington Post. Anyone familiar with Washington already knows that Sanders is a self-proclaimed socialist. His column, however, was not about socialism, but rather about climate change.
The scientific community is clear: Global warming is real and it is caused by human activity. In terms of droughts, heat waves, floods, forest fires, disease, rising sea levels and extreme weather disturbances, global warming is already causing devastating problems. The simple truth is that if we do not act boldly and quickly these problems will only get much worse in the years to come. Global warming is the greatest environmental threat facing the planet and averting a planetary disaster will require a major reduction in the burning of coal, oil and other fossil fuels.
With the non-stop rampage of scandals and problems hitting America, there are few people left who pay much attention to climate change these days, but ATTENTION MUST BE PAID. The Sanders piece provides a clear view into the attitude of the left towards this important subject. Let's consider what Sanders has to say.
First of all, Sanders tells us that the "scientific community is clear". That's not true; there remains a major debate in the scientific community about this topic.
Second, Sanders announces that Global warming is real. Over the last 17 years, the temperature of the Earth has remained steady. There have been some ups and some downs each year, but the average temperature today is just where it was 17 years ago. There has been no warming according to the measurements taken at thousands of locations around the world. On top of this, the USA has now released the first measurements taken over the last ten years by a new system of monitoring sites set up to follow America's climate as it gets hit by Global Warming. These measurements, however, show that over the last decade, the temperatures across North America have not risen at all. So there is no warming. At least it appears that there has been no warming over the last 17 years. Needless to say, if there is no warming, then there is no warming caused by human activity.
Third, Sanders tells us that droughts, heat waves, floods, forest fires, disease, rising sea levels and extreme weather disturbances are the result of Global Warming and are already affected humanity. Let's back up for a second. Remember that there has been no warming for the last 17 years? That means that all those severe weather events can't be the result of warming, cause there is no warming. On top of this, the reality is that severe weather events have been declining. There have been many fewer hurricanes than normal in the last five years. There have been many fewer tornadoes in the last few years. There have not been any more floods around the world in the last decade than in those that came previously. And how about those rising sea levels? They are supposed to be the result of the melting polar ice. The problem there is that the ice cap at the South Pole is at a record level. It is a record HIGH level, with more ice today than ever before since records have been kept. There is not melting ice raising sea levels. There is increasing ice which ought to lower sea levels. And it is not just the South Pole. The ice cap at the North Pole was also much larger than normal last winter. Other bodies of water also had extreme ice levels. The Great Lakes which are the largest fresh water bodies on Earth froze solid last winter. There was so much ice in these lakes that some of it remains there today in JULY!!! And that ice is no surprise. North America had the coldest winter since 1898 this past year. During the previous year, temperatures in Europe and Asia fell to lower levels than usual in the winter. So, none of what Senator Sanders is saying is accurate.
Of course, the total lack of accuracy in what Sanders says does not stop him from pushing for a major reduction in the use of certain kinds of energy. America is supposed to impoverish millions of people by switching to high cost energy rather than low cost energy. America is supposed to do this to prevent the occurrence of something that is not happening anyway.
I know that there are literally millions of people who do not understand just how wrong the Global Warming crowd is on this topic. After all, how can the government and the media be so wrong? I suggest that you just consider one question: why is it that when climate change skeptics (deniers if you prefer) bring up the temperature data that show no increase in temperature or data that shows a decrease in severe weather events or increases in polar ice, that the response from the Global Warming crowd is that everything is already settled. If the Global Warming crowd is actually correct, why don't they present the proof that supports them? Why is the debating posture of the Global Warming advocates that there cannot be any debate? Once you ponder that one, you will surely understand just how bankrupt the Global Warming position truly is.
