Immigration, The Border and Race

Is it racist to want a secure border between the USA and Mexico?  Certainly some Democrats think so, or at least they say so.  But why is that so?  Why is it racist to want to prevent terrorists or drug gang members from walking into this country untouched and unthreatened?  Is it racist to try to stop the illegal smuggling of heroin into the country?  Is it racist to try to prevent terrorist attacks in American cities?  Of course not!  So why is securing the border racist?

This is not an unimportant question.  Indeed, it is a question which, if answered truthfully, might move the debate on immigration very far towards a resolution.  We all know that there are many Democrats who try to turn every issue into one that revolves around race.  Just look at Harry Reid condemning the recent Supreme Court decisions which he said had five old white men making decisions about women's rights.  Justice Thomas will surely be shocked to learn that he is white according to Reid, so Harry Reid can't even get his facts correct.  But the key is that Reid felt compelled to add race to an issue that had nothing to do with race.  It was just more of the same from the Democrats who put race into everything.

Just imagine if the Democrats would admit the truth that securing the border has nothing to do with race and everything to do with national security and maintaining the rule of law.  It would be easy for Congress to pass a measure that required the government to get control of the borders.  And believe it or not, it would be easy for the federal government to shut down most of the flow of illegals into this country.  Oh, there would not be a leak-proof border, but the number of folks crossing illegally could be cut by at least 90% if proper effort went into enforcement.  At that point, we would still have 11 or 12 million illegals in this country.  The key, however, is that these 11 or 12 million would not just be a first wave to be followed by millions more; they would be a finite problem to which a solution could be found.

Just for once, why can't the Democrats look at a problem like immigration as something that needs to be solved for the good of the country rather than as an opportunity to make political points for the benefit of the Democrat party?  The truth is that the Democrats ought to learn this.  Were the Democrats ever to start trying to do what is right for the country rather than for their grip on power, there would likely be a major benefit to that party.
