A few hours ago, I posted about the failure of president Obama to speak to the prime minister of Israel despite the avalanche of missiles being fired at Israel by Hamas. Within two hours, news came out that Obama had indeed just spoken to prime minister Netanyahu of Israel. (No, I do not claim that my post had anything to do with that conversation taking place.) It was a travesty that Obama waited for so long to speak to the Israelis. But it is even worse to hear what Obama had to say in the call that finally took place.
According to the White House, Obama called upon Israel to avoid civilian casualties. He also said that both sides should prevent escalation of the fighting. Obama also offered to have the USA act as mediator between Hamas and Israel. Finally, Obama told Netanyahu that Israel has a right to self defense.
This was hardly a full throated statement of support for our ally which is under attack. Hundreds of missiles are being fired each day at Israel with more than half of that country having to rush to bomb shelters each time the alarm sounds. And Obama's main message is "avoid escalation". Really? If New York, Chicago and Washington were being attacked by missiles, just imagine the American response to being told by some other country to avoid escalation. And if those missiles were coming from residential districts in Mexico, do you think that America would hold off using the military to try to stop the attacks so that we could avoid civilian casualties? Of course not. But Obama not only waits to call the Israeli prime minister, he then lectures him on avoiding civilian casualties and avoiding escalation. If I were the prime minister of Israel, I don't know what I would say, but I sure know what I would be thinking. (Hint, it involves Obama committing an unnatural act on himself.)
