The AP is out with a report under the headline "US fuming over Israeli criticism of Kerry". The essence of the story is that American officials in the State Department and elsewhere are furious that Israeli media is castigating the cease fire proposal that John Kerry put on the table a few days back and that Israeli officials are (off the record) stating their disappointment and shock at the Kerry proposal. So what is the response from the Obama administration? First comes the lie: the State Department spokesman says that contrary to media reports, Kerry's proposal did not favor Hamas and reward it for its attacks. Then the spokesman claims that Kerry did not abandon the cease fire proposal initially made by Egypt. Those lies were then followed by the distortions needed to keep the lies going. Here is my favorite:
After the Israeli liberal media called the Kerry proposal a "strategic terrorist attack" because it abandoned the Egyptian framework and included all of the Hamas demands, Tony Blinken, Obama's deputy national security advisor, "disputed such characterizations, saying Kerry's proposal included 'virtually every element' that was in an earlier Egyptian proposal the Israelis agreed to more than a week ago."
As the Church Lady used to say on SNL years ago, "Well isn't that special!" The Egyptian proposal was for an immediate and unconditional cease fire to be followed by talks to resolve all open issues. Kerry also called for a cease fire, so he included that element of the Egyptian proposal. Kerry did not delete anything from the Egyptian proposal; he added all sorts of new stuff. 1) The border crossings out of Gaza would reopen. 2) There would be a new seaport built in Gaza to receive freighters for foreign trade with Gaza. 3) A funding mechanism would be set up to allow Qatar to send money to Hamas to be used for reconstruction. 4) Israeli troops would leave Gaza without any further ability to destroy the tunnels built by Hamas for infiltration into Israel. To make things worse Kerry "agreed" to this proposal with representatives of Turkey and Qatar, the two countries that are allied most closely with Hamas. Neither Egypt nor Israel were consulted.
To understand just how far this proposal goes to reward Hamas for its attack, you only need to know that the stated aims of Hamas in the current fighting are to reopen the Gaza border, to reopen the port of Gaza to unrestricted international shipping, to allow funds to be transferred through the international banking system to Hamas and to have the Israeli troops leave Gaza. Kerry agreed to every single demand made by Hamas. To tell the truth, even the leaders of Hamas must have been flabbergasted by Kerry's position.
Look, Kerry is a moron. For years he was known as the dumbest member of the U.S. Senate (and given the other senators, that is a hard title to earn). When Kerry, the moron, makes yet another moronic move, and when the people whose very lives are put in jeopardy by that moronic move protest and denounce the move, American officials have no basis for anger.
I am actually surprised that in view of the ridiculous and one-sided pro-Hamas proposal that Kerry put forward, Obama did not come out to speak to the media to tell America that he learned of the Kerry proposal in the news stories and that he is mad as hell about it and will investigate to get to the bottom of how that proposal was made.
