Tranquility?

In a new low from the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest said that president Obama's foreign policy had increased the tranquility of the world.  No, really, that is what Earnest said.  Even the pro-Obama reporters in the room were shocked to hear such a ridiculous claim come out of the mouth of the official spokesman for the White House.

In the last three years, there have been approximately 300,000 people killed worldwide in wars and acts of terror.  That is hardly tranquility.  But wait, you might say, Earnest only claimed that Obama increased tranquility, not that he had established it.  On that score, it is worth noting that in the three years prior to Obama taking office, there were fewer than 75,000 people killed in wars and acts of terror.  So we had four times more death and this is supposed to "tranquility".  But there's more.  In the years prior to Obama taking office, there was relative peace in East Asia; now China is threatening all of its neighbors.  In the years prior to Obama taking office, there was stability across much of the Middle East.  To be sure, there was fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict, but for the most part there was calm in the region.  Now, after five plus years of Obama, there is fighting in Egypt, Libya, Sudan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict.  Disorder and disruption is much worse now than before.  There is no tranquility in the region at all.

Then there's Europe.  In the few years prior to Obama taking office, there was no fighting in Europe aside from a few small terrorist movements.  Lately, after all this tranquility from Obama, we have seen ongoing battles in Crimea and the Ukraine.  There are also battles in Moldova and threats of fighting in Belarus.  Russia has been stirring up messes all across the continent.  So much for tranquility there.

The truth is that Obama has not created or increased tranquility.  He has destroyed and diminished tranquility.  Sadly, in most of the world, if people want to see tranquility, they now have to look at the moon to try to catch a glimpse of the Sea of Tranquility.
