Are We Too Battered To Care?

Do Americans really not care about scandals in Washington?  Do Americans really not care about lawless behavior by the federal government?  Do Americans really not care about terrorist threats that are clearly getting worse around the globe?  Do Americans really not care about the protection of freedom and liberty?  I don't think we have yet reached the point where the diet used by Kim Kardashian is of more interest than news events around the world; it just seems that way.

For the last few years, we have been subjected to an ever-increasing drumbeat of bad news.  We have endured Washington scandals like the IRS oppression of Christian and conservative groups and the cover-up that followed.  We have endured blatantly unconstitutional acts by our leaders like president Obama's twenty or more changes to Obamacare when he did not have the authority to make even one.  We have had to watch as ISIS made Iraq crumble and then inflicted death and mayhem on countless Iraqis.  We were onlookers again as Syria's leader used lethal nerve gas on thousands of civilians who supported his adversaries.  We now are following the action as terror group Hamas tries to rain death on our friends in Israel.  We have done nothing as dictators in place like Russia and Venezuela have crushed all opposition and even taken control of all sources of information.  We watched as the world searched for an airliner whose loss is still unexplained (although well covered, especially by CNN).  We watch our government move sometime with a glacial response like the capture of one member of the terror team that attacked our consulate in Benghazi and killed four; it only took two years for Obama to catch this one fellow despite his presence in many cafes in Benghazi where he gave interviews to various journalists.  Other times, we have seen our government fail at some of the more basic tasks it has undertaken.  For example, although there are millions of websites on the internet that function fine, our government built the single most expensive website in history and even to this day, it does not function properly.  There is lots more, but by now you surely get the point.  Anyone who follows events in the country understands that all Americans are battered and bruised from watching disasters, decay, dishonesty and deception on a massive scale.  For most folks, almost any subject other than the latest from Washington is preferable.

But do we still care as a country?  It is an important question, and the answer is far from clear.  Can we keep up with all the problems and scandals as they unfold while demanding solutions and not just speeches?  I would like to think so.  Will America step forward to continue its role of the last sixty years as the leader of the free world, or will we just retreat into isolation and reality TV?  The truth is that there are many out there who want just such a retreat.  They see no need for the people to care about what our government is doing, because the people are just too stupid to understand what is good for them.  They need the government to tell them.  Indeed, these same folks see nothing wrong with the government telling lies to the people because it is for their own good.  I'm sorry, but I just don't buy that.

The time has come for America and Americans to reassert themselves and their role in our country.  We can no longer sit by as crisis and disaster are visited upon us by the fools in Washington.  It is time to say, indeed to shout ENOUGH ALREADY!  It is a task that has to be done now; it just cannot wait until later.
