President Obama spoke in Dallas today, and he just couldn't help himself. He spoke about gun control as if it had some relation to the shooting deaths of the five police officers. The two are completely unrelated.
Let's be clear. There are a number of gun control proposals that liberals and Obama himself have been pushing. They want expanded background checks that do away with what they call the gun show loophole. They want people on the no-fly list banned from gun ownership. They want assault weapons outlawed. There's a few more, but those are the key points in the Democrat plan. But here's the big problem for the Democrats: none of this stuff would have prevented what happened in Dallas. The shooter had no history of mental problems, no felony convictions, and no appearance on the no fly list. The shooter used an old Soviet rifle from WW II, not an assault weapon. He didn't buy his weapon illegally. Simply put, if all those Democrat proposals had been passed, the shooter would still have had exactly the same weapon.
Why must a solemn occasion to mourn the deaths of five brave police officers be turned into a political rally by Obama? Why especially must he talk about gun control when it would not have changed anything that happened?
In his first year in office, Obama and his people used to say "never let a crisis go to waste." It's a vile sentiment that calls for politicizing people's misfortunes. In 2009, it was a recession; that was bad enough. Now, however, it is the death of five men. Just for once couldn't Obama stick to the subject and avoid the political games? These five men and their families deserve that respect. Indeed, America demands that respect.
Obama is truly hopeless.
