It's just a few weeks since Omar Mateen killed 50 people in a gay club in Orlando. Mateen announced that he was acting for ISIS, he praised and pledged allegiance to the head of that terror group, he announced his "solidarity" with the bombers of the Boston Marathon, and generally made clear that he was an Islamic terrorist. The response from president Obama, Hillary Clinton, most Democrats and the media has been to downplay the Islamic aspects of what Mateen did and instead to talk about the need for gun control. To use the favorite phrasing of these terrorism deniers, they are fighting for "common sense gun safety legislation".
As an aside, it's worth noting that Mateen used guns that were purchased legally in his attack. None of the "common sense gun safety legislation" currently being pushed by the Democrats would have changed his ability to buy the guns. Banning the sale of weapons to those on the no-fly list would not have mattered; Mateen had been investigated, but the feds did not put him on the no-fly list. Removing the so-called gun show loophole also would not have mattered. Mateen bought his guns after obtaining a permit for them and passing all of the possible background checks. Mateen was even working for a company that provided security for the government. One of the guns Mateen used might have fallen within a ban on "assault weapons", but the others would not. Those who died in the slaughter would still be dead no matter what type of guns Mateen used in the shootings. Despite the clear futility of the gun legislation being pushed by the Democrats, they continue their course of claiming it as a remedy for these "mass shootings".
After Orlando, it looked for a few days like the Democrats false offensive to blame guns might be making some headway. One poll of Americans found that just over 40% considered Orlando to be a "mass shooting" while 49% considered it a terror attack. The all out assault by the terrorism deniers managed to convince over 4 in 10 that the problem in Orlando was guns rather than the shooter and his allegiance to ISIS. We had some rather nonsensical moments in the phony offensive. One senator from my own state of Connecticut started a filibuster in the Senate to force votes on "common sense gun safety legislation". When the votes actually went ahead, Murphy himself then voted against two of the measures. This self proclaimed fighter for gun control couldn't bring himself to vote for a bill proposed by a Republican that would have increased funding for better operation of the background check system and set forth a method to bar purchases by those on the no-fly list. Murphy is clearly a hypocrite, but he is not alone; almost every Democrat did the same. Then we had the posh "sit-in" by the Democrats in the House. These pompous elites tried to bring back their memories of the 1960s. Of course, the House Democrats sat in with a catered buffet in an adjoining room.
The onslaught by the terrorism deniers has now been crushed by events. We had the terrorist attack by ISIS in Istanbul that killed scores of innocent civilians. Then we had the Islamic terror attack in Dhaka, Bangladesh in which the terrorists hacked to death those of their captives who could not recite the Koran. We've seen an upsurge in terror attacks also in Iraq and Syria and elsewhere around the world. ISIS had called on its warriors to carry out attacks during the Islamic month of Ramadan. As that month draws to a close in the next few days, we may expect even more attacks coming from the Islamic terrorists.
The strange thing is that even as the unmistakable truth of the dangers of Islamic terrorism unfolds, the Democrats are still talking about this as a gun control problem. It seems that they have no plan for dealing with terrorism, so they are choosing just to deny the existence of a problem. Think about it. Did you hear president Obama's statement about the heinous terror attack in Dhaka in which three American college students who were having dinner in a restaurant were chopped up by machetes wielded by ISIS "Islamic warriors"? There was no such statement. After all, how can you blame guns for terrorism carried out with knives?
Terrorism Denial is a plague on our country. There are groups of Islamic terrorists who have made clear that their goal is either to kill us all or to convert us to their brand of Islam. These terrorists are serious; at this point, anyone who doubts that is delusional. Our choice is simple: we can respond to the threat and try to extinguish the terror groups or we can deny the existence of the terrorists and pretend that the problem is really something else. The first choice gives us a chance to end the scourge. The second choice is just the path to hundreds or thousands more casualties. The Terrorism Deniers are choosing death for their fellow Americans and many others. Even worse, the Terrorism Deniers are making that choice in order to get a political advantage; they seem not to care how many will die if it will let them hold power.
