There was a news conference in Central Park a short time ago to report on the bomb blast that injured an 18 year old guy. The police/bomb squad/EMT and fire department reported the following:
1. The three guys who were there when the blast went off are not suspected of having any involvement with it. They just happened to be walking by and the blast occurred when one of them stepped on the explosive.
2. The bomb squad said that this was a shock sensitive explosive. In other words, it was something that would explode if someone stepped on it. In that way, it was much like a land mine.
3. The bomb squad also says that the device had been in place for at least one day prior to the explosion. That means that this was not some fireworks that someone just left temporarily by the side of the path.
4. The explosion was not the result of commercial fireworks going off. The explosive was home made according to the authorities.
5. The police speculate that this may have been some home made explosive device to be used like a firecracker on July 4th. (Of course, this makes one wonder why someone went to the trouble of making the device only to leave it planted next to the path near the Central Park Zoo.)
6. The police have deployed bomb sniffing dogs to search the area near the explosion and to generally survey the entire Central Park area.
It certainly seems like this is an IED. Why else would someone plant the equivalent of a land mine next to the path near the zoo in the park? It may turn out to be something else, but as of now, terrorism is the most likely answer.
