There was a short period in the last month during which the mainstream media thought that America was really ready to embrace socialism. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, an avowed Socialist, won the primary in a heavily Hispanic district in New York City against the white incumbent favored by the local Democrat machine. Instead of seeing this as the 55% Hispanic vote outweighing the 15% white vote in the district, the media proclaimed Ocasio-Cortez as the new face of the Democrats. She was young Socialism being embraced by the party. Now, a month later, Ocasio-Cortez has flamed out after being revealed as an airhead who knows next to nothing about our government, our history and our economic system. That upsets the mainstream media since they already proclaimed the arrival of American socialism.
To deal with this problem, the media has come up with a new take on the economic plans of the parties. The Democrats may be moving to embrace socialism, but the Republicans are also abandoning capitalism in favor of central control of the economy in the form of statism. It's an interesting take, but it is not even remotely true. Over the last year and a half since President Trump took office, his administration got rid of an enormous number of government controls on the economy. He freed up the free enterprise system to work as only it can work to produce growth and wealth. It was Obama and his people who tried to direct everything from Washington. Trump has gotten rid of these controls. On top of this, President Trump has pushed through a tax cut which returns to the people and to businesses much more of their own money for them to control. That's free enterprise, not statism. But the media argues that the imposition of tariffs is a manifestation of statism; that too is wrong. Sure, tariffs put the government into the position of interfering with trade. If the tariffs were an end in of themselves, this could be looked at in that way. The tariffs, however, are a bargaining chip to get other countries to reduce their tariffs and other trade restrictions. The goal is a freer trade system, not one controlled by the government.
The reality is that the Trump administration and the GOP embrace a free market economy and capitalism. No article from a mainstream media reporter can change that fact.
